Oregon AWHONN Pulls Off Another Successful Conference

by Nancy Alt, BSN, RNC-OB and Robin Cothrell-Tubbs, MN, RN

Nestled in the beauty of The Oregon Garden, Oregon AWHONN presented another successful Fall Conference at the end of September. With almost 200 attendees, the Fall Conference was well attended and jam-packed with useful and exciting information. “I thought the topics presented this year were an outstanding collection,” said one attendee. “This was my first AWHONN conference and I loved it!” said another.

Attendees heard presenters from across the country speak on topics ranging from labor support to infant gut microbiome. AWHONN President Dr. Emily Drake spoke on Embracing Change and on PTSD in Labor and Delivery and Beyond. Attendees also had the opportunity to network with fellow nurses from hospital systems across Oregon as well as nurses from other states including California, Washington, Montana, and even as far away as New Jersey.

Nurses Rock

Every year, Oregon AWHONN shows support for a local non-profit in the city in which the Fall Conference is held. This year, we supported Silverton Area Community Aid. Their mission is "To make a positive difference in our community by providing food, financial assistance, and information to people in need in a respectful environment." Through a quilt raffle and diaper drive, attendees gathered a total of 2,054 diapers and $950 in donations. Thanks to a match from Oregon AWHONN and a donation from NWPRN, we donated a total of $2,400 to Silverton Area Community Aid. Thanks nurses! You truly are AMAZING!

Conference Attendees Show Their Generosity

The Oregon AWHONN Fall Conference may be over, but we've left a lasting impression. Not only did we raise $2,400 for Silverton Area Community Aid, 45 generous donors at the 2016 Oregon AWHONN Fall Conference raised $2,000 for Every Woman, Every Baby, making it possible to help improve care for late preterm infants, increase breastfeeding, champion spontaneous labor and encourage healthier habits for women at every stage of life. Money donated to the Every Woman, Every Baby campaign supports professional development of AWHONN members, research to improve nursing practice and patient care, and education and activities promoting the health of women and newborns. Thanks to all those who donated. You can keep donating through the end of this year to help put Oregon on top again. If Oregon has the highest percentage of contributing members or raises the most money, all donors will be entered in a drawing for complimentary registration for 2017 AWHONN Convention in New Orleans, LA, June 24-28.
